Petfinder.org - Use this great site to search for any kind of animal you would like to adopt. Put in your zip code and listings will start with the animals closest to you. Most shelters are on Petfinder now, so it's a great way to search across many shelters at once. Private people can also list pets for adoption on this very popular site, which gets a LOT of traffic.
